The Doctors of Jazz specializes in the traditional New Orleans jazz typified by Joe "King" Oliver's Creole Jazz Band from the early 1920s, Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and the later West Coast revival, Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band.
The band was established in 1983 by an enthusiastic group of professors at the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia; today professors from Virginia Union Seminary and Virginia Commonwealth University have become regulars. DoJ performs frequently around central Virginia. It has also completed five European tours.
